Digital heating

At ISH 2017, the world's leading trade fair in its field, digital heating is a key area of focus in the ISH Energy section. Digitalisation represents a quantum leap for the heating industry. Heating controllers which have, up to now, been essentially analogue devices, are giving way to digital control using smartphones and tablets. And it is a technological development that brings modern heating technology to the forefront of consumer consciousness.

At the same time, the new technology also offers users a host of technological and economic advantages. As a result, energy efficiency is increased yet further using digital control. The operation of the heating system is optimally adjusted to fit in with the user's behaviour patterns. The heating system actually 'learns' appropriate responses and thus adapts to the daily life of the inhabitants. Users can observe the contribution made by renewable energies, where, for example, there are solar-thermal installations. By entering local weather data, further energy savings can be achieved – and hence economic savings, too.

Digitalisation as an element in energy integration

But it is not only for the end consumer that digitalisation harbours advantages. It is also a necessary pre-condition of increased integration between the electricity, heat and mobility sectors, often termed 'integrated energy'. Using a procedure known as 'power-to-heat', hybrid heating systems can feed volatile peak supply of renewable electricity into the heating market. It can be achieved using, for instance, a small-scale heat pump combined with a condensing boiler to cater for peak loads. This requires a flexible electricity tariff and a digital interface between the electricity and heating markets.

In addition to the advantages for the end consumer described above and its key role in the integration of energy, digitalisation contributes to the upward re-evaluation of heating as a 'high interest product'. This topic will receive considerable attention at ISH 2017.
