When it comes to modern computer-aided management of a building project over its whole life cycle ‘Building Information Modelling’, BIM in short, is the magic word. This method can be used to digitally map the planning, construction phase, subsequent operation and potential change of use of the building, including, ultimately, demolition of the building substance and is applicable not only to building construction and civil engineering works, but also to infrastructure projects.

The conditions required to implement this BIM method are in place. It is no longer just a vision and will facilitate data exchange between planners and operators involved in the respective project throughout the different phases of the project’s life ensuring as little data loss as possible. buildingSMART is an organisation with global reach that has developed the `Industry Foundation Classes` (IFC) data interface. It is designed as a platform that enables data exchange for the purposes of BIM through the widest range of software solutions offering data transfer via this interface.

Information loss is a very big problem, particularly in the context of data transfer, and this platform largely prevents it, being based, as it is, on a comprehensive building data model, which architects, planners, contracting companies and the building owner can see, use and extend in accordance with the planning or construction status. Essentially, it makes all data relevant to the operation of a facility or a building available in a structured and uniform data format and so can also be used for facility management purposes.
