The bathroom of the future – innovations to improve the quality of life

As society changes, so our living environments are also undergoing transformation. With its innovative products for the bathroom of the future, the German sanitary industry is responding to the megatrends: 'Female Shift', 'Health', 'Silver Society' and 'Sustainability'.

Increasing prosperity, demographic change, and a new division of roles have been changing our society for a number of years now. Alongside this, our requirements in our own homes have changed – with regard to body care, for example.

The 'Female Shift' megatrend is all about women’s pursuit of equality - this means that the man’s role in the household is growing. Digital technologies are being brought in. Smart Water technology, for example, enables the exact temperature and volume of water coming out of the taps to be controlled at the touch of a button. In addition, there are Apps to provide entertainment and information in the bathroom. Mirror Apps project news items, images and emails onto the bathroom mirror.

Against the backdrop of increasing prosperity and an ageing society, the focus is ever more on health. As a comfort zone, the bathroom contributes to the regeneration of body and soul. Shower toilets, which gently wash you clean after using the toilet, and hydro-applications such as extendable water hoses, are becoming more and more popular. Special systems create a beneficial and, at the same time, anti-ageing effect in the bath tub, using micro-fine air bubbles. So that people can live in their own homes independently for as long as possible, bathroom concepts are being adapted to the changing needs of the individual. These include, for example, showers that are flush with the floor and height-adjustable features.

The growing sensitisation to greater sustainability is leading to a growing demand for products that balance ecological, economic and social needs. As Wolfgang Burchard, Director of the VDMA’s Association of Valve Manufacturers sums up: ̎The bathroom of the future is able to adapt flexibly to people’s needs; it protects the environment and contributes both to maintaining health and to personal comfort".
