In the international Design Plus competition at ISH 2017, awards will once again be given to exhibitors whose products stand out because of their clever combination of technology and design. A panel of seven experts has judged 154 submissions according to criteria that include, among others, design quality, overall concept, innovative content, choice of materials, as well as technical and ecological aspects. 106 companies, including 42 from Germany and 64 from abroad, took part in the competition. The judging panel has given the 'Design Plus powered by ISH' award to 25 products. Awards go to 14 German companies and designers, and to 11 participants from Australia, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and Spain.
During the ISH fair, all award-winning products will be on display within a special show in the foyer of Hall 4.2. The official prize-giving ceremony will take place at 14.00 on the opening day of the fair.

As Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Messe Frankfurt GmbH, explains: "More than 2,400 exhibitors at ISH will be showcasing their innovations in the areas of bathroom solutions, building services, energy and air-conditioning technologies, and renewable energies. This is where our Design Plus competition can provide a means of orientation for the huge range of products on show and offer a guarantee of outstanding product quality. The award-winning products captivate us with intelligent technology, high functionality, aesthetics and technical precision. In addition, they set new standards in terms of sustainability, energy efficiency and saving resources. Visitors should be sure not to miss the special show."

The German Design Council (Rat für Formgebung) is conducting the Design Plus competition for Messe Frankfurt. "We have been delighted for years to observe positive development in the sector: it has long since discovered the value of excellent design as the driver for successful branding and the improved sales opportunities that this brings, and it has played to these strengths. The sanitary sector is putting forward intelligent and increasingly individualised bathroom solutions with a high standard of design; heating and air-conditioning technology products impress us with a successful combination of innovative design, technology that is often ambitious, and a high degree of user-friendliness", says Lutz Dietzold, Managing Director of the German Design Council, as he extols the sector’s increasing brand and design awareness. "The ISH fair provides innovators in the sector with a first class platform that is recognised across the world. It is generating ideas for the future development of the sector with the Design Plus competition."

The 154 products submitted were judged at a meeting on 4 January by a panel of experts from a wide variety of fields. The members of the panel were:

  • Bernhard Heitz, dormakaba Group International Holding GmbH, Rümlang/Switzerland
  • Dr. Michael Herma, Forum for Energy Efficiency in Building Technologies (Forum für Energieeffizienz in der Gebäudetechnik e.V. - VdZ), Berlin
  • Neesken Ashana Hohgräve, Otto Bock HealthCare GmbH, Duderstadt
  • Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk, JOI-Design GmbH Interior Designers, Hamburg
  • Gabriele Thiels, A&W Architektur & Wohnen, Hamburg
  • Udo Wirges, German Sanitation, Heating and Air Conditioning Association (Zentralverband Sanitär Heizung Klima – ZVSHK), St. Augustin
  • Jens Wischmann, German Sanitary Industry Association (Vereinigung Deutsche Sanitärwirtschaft e.V. - VDS), Bonn.

In the bathrooms category, the judging panel gave awards for innovative WCs that incorporate, for example, multi-functional heated towel rails, and flush plates with intelligent functions, as well as prizes for individual bathroom furniture and special fittings. In the heating and air-conditioning technology segment, the panel decided on a pellet burner with optimised combustion and a high degree of efficiency, and a series of innovative radiators, which, for example, can be installed in a modular way, are wafer-thin and highly efficient, or can be folded like screens.

ISH is the world’s leading trade fair for bathrooms, building services, energy and air-conditioning technologies, and renewable energies. From 14 to 18 March 2017, more than 2,400 exhibitors, including all market and technology leaders, will be showcasing their products on the theme of 'Water. Energy. Life'. The ISH Water section, with the trend topic 'Bathrooms for People', will focus on sustainable sanitary solutions and innovative bathroom design. In the ISH Energy and Aircontec section, the sector will be showcasing innovations for energy efficiency and convenient buildings solutions around the top theme: 'The energy revolution with a bright future - we have the solutions'.
