Cartesian's Thermal Box: Leading the Way in Sustainable Heating & Cooling in Buildings

Innovative Thermal Energy Storage:

Cartesian's Thermal Box relies on sustainably-sourced phase change materials (PCMs) to store heating and cooling energy efficiently with a minimal footprint. This technology is ideal for building applications, offering a compact and sustainable solution to energy storage challenges. With over half of building electricity used for heating and cooling, Cartesian's technology optimizes energy usage, balances grid capacity, and reduces peak power demand and energy costs.

Seamless System Integration:

The Thermal Box is designed for easy integration into existing heating and cooling systems in commercial buildings. It works with various heating sources such as heat pumps, electric heaters, gas boilers, and district heating, as well as centralized refrigeration systems for cooling. This integration reduces the required installed capacity and investment costs for HVAC systems.

Scalable and Flexible Design:

The modular design of the Thermal Box allows for easy scaling by adding more units to increase storage capacity and thermal output. It fits the size of a Euro Pallet (1.2 x 0.8 m) and each module can store up to 125 kWh of heat or cold energy. The Thermal Box can be installed both indoors and outdoors, providing flexibility in placement and application.

Advanced Technology:

The Thermal Box leverages the high energy density of PCMs, which absorb and release large amounts of thermal energy during phase changes. Our solution is based on the principle of melting and solidifying materials to store energy, which, unlike chemical reactions, is fully reversible. This makes our technology both compact, highly efficient and long-lasting for thermal energy storage.

Cost-Effective and Energy Saving:

By reducing the required capacity of HVAC equipment in commercial buildings, the Thermal Box lowers investment costs by 35-45%. It improves heating system efficiency by 8-10% and thus offers significant energy savings, contributing to a lower carbon footprint and helping buildings meet ESG goals. When it comes to air-conditioning, generating cooling at night, when outdoor temperatures are lower, further enhances equipment performance and energy savings by up to 20%.

Sustainable by design:

Beyond using sustainably-sourced PCMs, such as bio-based wax or water, Cartesian’s Thermal Box is designed with abondant materials, assembled in a manner to make their dismantling and end-of-life recycling seamless. The Thermal Box is built to last for 25 years, while economic payback and environmental payback are generally both less than 5 years, making it a cost-effective investment.

Award-Winning Innovation:

Cartesian's Thermal Box is a game-changer in sustainable design, offering a scalable, efficient, and cost-effective solution for thermal energy storage in buildings. Its innovative approach to energy efficiency and sustainability makes it a strong contender for any sustainable design award.

Key Benefits:

  • Load Shifting and Peak Shaving: The Thermal Box charges during times of low energy demand and discharges during peak demand, flattening heating and cooling loads and reducing energy costs.
  • Reduced HVAC Investment: By handling peak loads, the Thermal Box allows HVAC systems to operate at a lower,
  • constant load, reducing dimensioning and investment costs.
  • Improved Energy Efficiency: The overall efficiency of heating and cooling systems is improved, reducing energy use and carbon footprint.
  • Flexible Installation: The Thermal Box can be placed in technical rooms, other indoor areas, or outdoors, offering
  • flexibility in installation and application.
  • High degree of circularity: The Thermal Box is designed with sustainable, abondant and long-lasting materials, yet easy to recirculate at the end-of-life.

Cartesian's Thermal Box represents a significant advancement in sustainable HVAC for building. Its innovative use of PCMs, scalable modular design, and seamless integration with existing systems make it an ideal solution for optimizing energy usage and reducing costs in the building sector.

The Cartesian Thermal Box redefines thermal energy storage in buildings. It relies on sustainably sourced phase change materials that absorb and release a large amount of thermal energy. Another impressive feature is that it can be integrated into existing heating and cooling systems, where it improves energy efficiency by shifting loads and reducing peak loads. The modular design is suitable for indoor and outdoor installation and therefore offers great flexibility.

Geberit Silent-Pro SuperTube: A flow-optimised drainage system for high-rise buildings

Geberit is expanding its highly sound-insulated Silent-Pro drainage system with new, hydraulically optimised fittings: the new technology is called Silent-Pro SuperTube. It has been specifically developed for high-rise buildings or houses with multiple distorted downpipes, where high demands on efficient planning and installation as well as cost-effectiveness must be met. The SuperTube technology optimises the waste water installation in terms of hydraulics and installation technology, so that drainage can be implemented without prohibited connection zones. Bypass pipes are no longer required, and horizontal pipes up to six metres (for d110) or up to four metres (for d90) can be installed without a slope. Additionally, the discharge capacity in the downpipe is increased by up to 15 % compared to a conventional branch bend. This revolutionary technology redefines the planning and installation of highly sound-insulated drainage systems. Since April 2024, Geberit’s latest innovation makes an important contribution to greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness in high-rise construction.

Installers often work under cost and time pressure when implementing projects. Planners and architects, on the other hand, bear the responsibility of ensuring proper planning and compliance with regulatory requirements. Moreover, the goal is to allocate as little space as possible for technical installations while maximising usable building space. Hence, all parties involved seek to achieve the maximum possible living space while keeping the costs low. Geberit fulfils this demand with its innovative wastewater technology Silent-Pro SuperTube, which is compatible with the Geberit Silent-Pro drainage system.

Due to its innovative approach, the Geberit SuperTube technology is outside standard regulations which makes it unique in the market. The hydraulic performance and function of Geberit Silent-Pro SuperTube have been confirmed by a test report from TÜV Rheinland LGA Products.

No bypass pipes: less space, lower costs

In buildings with downpipe lengths of more than ten metres, bypass pipes must be installed in the area of downpipe bends and at the transition from a vertical downpipe to a horizontal pipe. Prohibited connection zones must also be observed in these areas. These additional measures and restrictions do not apply when using the new Geberit Silent-Pro SuperTube fittings.

Thanks to the flow-optimised internal geometry of the new fittings, bypass pipes are no longer required. Moreover, the technology enables the planning and installation of horizontal pipes with a length of up to six metres without a slope.

As a result, the ceiling height in the rooms can be utilised optimally, as the bypass pipe can be installed very close to the ceiling. This makes it easier to comply with prescribed minimum room heights. The elimination of bypasses not only reduces material costs but also shortens installation times significantly.

Hydraulically optimised thanks to continuous air column

The technology encompasses three new components. Firstly, the Geberit Silent-Pro Carve Branch fitting: this moulded piece prevents hydraulic sealing in the downpipe. By introducing inflowing waste water tangentially into the downpipe, the continuous air column is maintained, reducing pressure fluctuations in the system. The water is set into rotational movement (annular flow), causing it to flow along the pipe wall while the continuous air column is maintained.

The Geberit Silent-Pro Carve Branch fitting therefore achieves up to 15 % higher discharge capacity in the downpipe compared to a conventional curved branch. For d90, it increases from 3.5 l/s to 4.0 l/s and for d110 from 5.2 l/s to 6.0 l/s. This makes the system flexible with regard to possible adjustments in the construction process or a later conversion or extension of the building.

The second component is the Geberit Silent-Pro BottomTurn bend: its flow-optimised geometry ensures that the air column in the downpipe is not interrupted, allowing redirection without unnecessary energy losses. The flow divider directs the waste water to the outside of the bend, where the guide channel allows the annular flow to transition into the horizontal pipe without lateral sloshing. In this way, the momentum of the downpipe can be utilised optimally.

Finally, the Geberit Silent-Pro BackFlip bend converts the layered flow back into an annular flow. The unique deflection prevents hydraulic shut-off.

These three components eliminate the need for more complex solutions for installing diverters, which would require two 45° bends with an intermediate piece.

Saving Resources with reduced material use

Geberit Silent-Pro SuperTube is the hydraulically optimised addition to the highly sound-insulated Geberit Silent-Pro plug-in drainage system. The system is ideal for downpipes and floor connections in construction projects with high sound-insulation requirements. The new SuperTube technology fittings for High-rise constructions or terraced houses have the same product and material properties as the rest of the system components, including sound-insulation.

The elimination of the bypass means that less material is required. For the same reason, only one fire protection sleeve is required. Fire protection with the Geberit fire protection sleeve 90 Plus EN and the Geberit Silent-Pro BottomTurn bend was proven in fire tests over 90 minutes in accordance with the applicable test regulations.

Silent-Pro SuperTube offers a wide selection of moulded parts for the most common applications. The components are available in the dimensions d100 and d90.

Simply flexible planning

The system can be planned easily and reliably using all standard tools, including Geberit ProPlanner or Dendrit Studio. BIM data is also available in the catalogue for Geberit Silent-Pro SuperTube. A dedicated SuperTube assistant is available for planning.

The highly sound-insulated Silent-Pro drainage system, enhanced by the hydraulically optimised SuperTube technology, impresses with an efficient wastewater installation without bypass pipes. Space requirements, material usage and costs can therefore be significantly reduced. As only one pipe penetration seal is required, fire protection is also simplified. The new internal geometry is flow-optimised and allows pipes of up to six metres to be laid horizontally without a gradient. The drainage capacity in the downpipe is increased by up to 15 per cent as a result.

GeoCollect Erdwärme Absorber Modul

GeoCollect Erdwärme Absorber Modul

Company: GeoCollect GmbH
Stand number:
12.1 C72
Category:
WATER & EFFICIENCY +
Product group:
Brine/ water heat pump
Designer: GeoCollect GmbH

GeoCollect GmbH was founded in Regensburg in 2011 and has been based in Chemnitz since 2018.

Key milestones were the approval of the EU Horizon 2020 funding in 2016 and the listing by Viessmann Deutschland GmbH in 2018.

The company's aim was and still is to develop, manufacture and sell a patented and utility model-protected thin-layer, large-area and turbulent flow heat exchanger for significantly higher extraction rates in the ground than would be possible with tube physics. This optimum heat exchanger physics in combination with a vertical installation position enables extraction rates of 142.61 W/m² with 2000 full load hours per year in the standard installation method.

With an installation depth of 1.50 m and a lateral installation distance of at least 70 cm from each other, the GeoCollect

absorber is able to utilize the solidification heat released by icing to a greater extent than other systems, as it regenerates much faster than other known systems. This makes the GeoCollect ground absorber a hybrid between classic ground collectors and ice storage. Of course, the strong utilization of solidification heat requires that the backfill material has a capillary structure so that volume changes in the ground do not affect the surface. The GeoCollect geothermal heat absorber system is designed in such a way that ice formation cannot coalesce.

In contrast to many other ground collectors, the GeoCollect geothermal absorber system is a very efficient source of passive cooling in the summer months. A cooling capacity of 1 kW per absorber string can be called upon for over 500 cooling hours per season.

The individual absorber strings are connected in parallel via a brine distributor. Hydraulic balancing is carried out by means of flow rate limiters in the distribution shaft.

The GeoCollect geothermal absorber system can generally also be used in zone III drinking water and medicinal spring protection areas. In the case of high groundwater levels, the installation of an additional natural sealing layer (bentonite mats) may be prescribed.

For a general assessment of whether the site area is sufficient for the absorber system, it can be assumed that one third of the building area to be heated is sufficient for standard installation. Installation on two levels is possible and reduces the required plot area to one sixth of the building area to be heated.

Under special conditions, it is also possible to build over the absorber field. For example, in the case of overbuilding with infiltration-capable paving (e.g. parking lot, driveway), it must be ensured that the paving has a permanent permeability of 270 l/s*ha and that the open-pored concrete to be installed underneath as a base layer has a Kf value > 10-4 m/s.

When building over sealed surfaces, including underneath buildings, it is essential to ensure that the surface is moistened.

The GeoCollect geothermal absorber module is a contribution to the energy revolution: Thanks to its special design and utilisation of solidification heat, it enables particularly high extraction rates in the ground and can be used for both heating and passive cooling. Thanks to its installation on two levels, the required site area of the geothermal absorber system is reduced and the absorber field can also be built over.

Burgbad's trade fair stand for ISH 25 in Frankfurt is a modified reconstruction of the stand concept from ISH 23. Through the use of ecological materials and the modular and reusable room system, it embodies a sustainable concept that impresses with its clarity and lightness. At the center of the stand is a 4.5m high wooden shelf, which is arranged in an asymmetrical cross shape and is slightly rotated in the room. The geometry of the shelf creates four spatial zones in which three product lines and an innovative material and color matrix of the brand are exhibited. A 7m high, transparent white curtain with a lemon yellow color gradient on several levels envelops the stand, creating different insights depending on the viewing angle and arousing curiosity about the exhibition behind it. Photos of the current product campaign are displayed in suspended picture frames. The natural look of the wood used, the yellow-white curtain and a homogeneous, sand-colored floor radiate warmth and comfort on the stand. A homely atmosphere in the context of natural and environmentally friendly materials makes the Burgbad trade fair stand a communicative and inspiring place.

Materials used

The material concept is characterized by a reduced use of fewer, natural and reusable materials. The modular shelving unit is made of local spruce and squared timber profiles with visible screw connections.

Birch plywood panels attached to the shelf form the background for the presentation of the Burgbad products. A light, textile cover spatially encloses the exhibition stand and all Burgbad logos are suspended as contour-cut paper honeycomb panels in front of the curtains. New colored and textile surfaces are made from recycled waste materials. It should be emphasized that almost 100% of all materials from 2023 have been reused. (Multiplex panels FSC certificate, floor material FSC + PEFC certificate)

Modular design

Despite a new location in the exhibition hall, the entire stand could be rebuilt in 2025 thanks to its sustainable, modular basic concept from 2023. The heart of the stand remains the modular, easy-to-assemble and dismantle shelving, which allowed the new product applications to be presented in a new way without any problems. The textile cover could be reconfigured with the exact same curtains.

The longevity of the natural materials used and the modularity of the space-creating elements mean that further trade fair appearances, even on smaller stand areas, are no problem.

In order to create a visual change despite the 100% reused materials, we work with textiles to cover the shelf structure, color-lacquered birch plywood panels as product backgrounds and a color-changing styling.

A nice effect of painting the birch plywood panels here is that we can use them again by filling and painting over them and also have a visible change that makes the exhibition stand a little more homely and sensual this year. Reuse and visual change, which was desired, solved in one, see visualizations in the pdf compared to the photos from 2023.

Energy efficiency measures

The entire lighting concept is based on a precisely controlled system of LED panel lights.

Transportation and logistics

Due to the very minimized use of materials on the exhibition stand, essentially a dissolved wooden support structure as a presentation system and a textile room shell, the overall transport volume is very low.

For years Burgbad has been working with a regional stand builder with a good network in southern Germany, who also looks after other exhibition stands at the ISH and acts synergistically in terms of transport and logistics.

Recycling and waste management

The ISH 25 stand consists of almost 100% recycled materials and components from the ISH 23 stand. The birch plywood panels as product backgrounds from 2023 will be refurbished by filling and painting them in color. However, the traces of recycling are deliberately left visible.

Additional sustainability strategies

Catering: We recruit the hosts close to the trade fair location. Travel is mainly by bus, train or carpooling. The focus lies on products from the region, organic quality (coffee, tea and snacks) and fair trade. We offer certified products and work with regional and medium-sized family businesses. Through professional quantity calculations and sustainable food concepts, we help to make better use of resources and minimize food waste.

Technologies used

Digital catalog requirements, QR codes on furniture group for more detailed information, digital visitor tracking, digital trade fair tour.

burgbad impressively demonstrates how appealing and functional a sustainable design can be for exhibition stand construction at the ISH: as a new edition of the stand concept for ISH 2023, the modular room system is demonstrably recyclable. With a high wooden shelf on the surface and a transparent curtain covering it, a variety of visual axes and levels for presentation are created. The sustainable material concept was thought through down to the last detail: the burgbad logos were realised as contour-cut paper honeycombs.
